Crop Circles

Extraterrestrial Graffiti’ This is actually one of the first bits we wrote for Backspace- I salvaged this out of the original script and re-wrote the dialogue. It was originally about two pages worth of dialogue traded back and forth about Aliens, Crop Circles and Art.

It’s been so long now that i can’t really recall how the idea came about.. I can’t think of what prompted us to write this one out- I want to say it was angst towards the art school and artstar-ish behavior in general. The aliens bit i believe came about while either Kyle or myself were flipping through the channels and caught one of the many, many documentaries about ‘crop circles’ on the History Channel. Somewhere along the lines we combined the two and you have this weeks comic. That’s pretty much how it works for a lot of these :D

Change of setting for this one, i asked Kyle to draw himself and Casey in the laundromat for a change of scenery. It looks exactly like the laundromat i go to- very fitting. You may (or may not) notice that our crazy farmer on the television is the gun cradling porch sitter from ‘Ghost Cannon’. I think anytime we have some strange phenomenon this guy is gonna pop up. We’re trying to start building up some of our characters we’ve introduced, as this was our original intent, so be on the lookout for them in the upcoming comics. Oh, the aliens in this are obviously the same type of ones featured in ‘Wooden Spaceship’, and we’ll be having them back again in a couple weeks. We can’t seem to steer clear of alien related spoofs- we just find them too funny.

Plot wise- I’m feeling Backspace is very reminiscent of the Clerks universe, except ours makes even less sense, which i’m pretty happy about- In another 25 comics we’ll be able to flesh out the universe some more. The progression of the artwork and colors has really come along- It definitely shows. This weeks comic looks tight, artwork and colors look great. Its cool to see the progression from the first comic to this weeks, which would be no. 25
