“Backspace is a comic about nothing really; it’s sort of like the ‘Robot Chicken’ of comics. It’s just a bunch of random stuff really; there’s a lot of movie parodies and spoofs and some stuff that involves our characters; there’s a general geek angle to the whole thing. It’s not really high brow comedy, it isn’t even written very well actually… but we find it funny, hopefully other people will too.” -Backspace Creators 2009 interview with Alfred University’s Student Newspaper, The Fiat Lux.
The concept for ‘Backspace’ began as a screenplay for a feature length film titled ‘Geeks’, akin to the spirit of Wierd Al Yankovic’s ‘UHF’ & ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ – It was written as a series of parodies, action driven scenes and quirky characters; all centered around an adventure of a post-college group of friends. After the idea hit the skids due to budget, the concept was re-tooled as an animation and finally as a webcomic which was the easiest way to conceptualize the overall idea. The title ‘Backspace’ was actually the last thing to be finalized before it’s launch in 2009. The title ‘Backspace’ was chosen as a parody of other webcomics with similar naming conventions.
Backspace is written by Kyle Wengren (illustrator), Jeremy Stephens (letterer) and Casey Lumbra (colorist).
