The other week Mario Van Peebles crashed our party and cleaned house thanks to Casey’s taunting. I’m still not sure weather he was lurking outside our window for no good reason, or if he appeared due to his name being called three times… like Bloody Mary or Beetlejuice, or Oprah. It was just a stupid thing for Casey to do, i mean it’s MARIO VAN PEEBLES, he was in Solo. You just don’t mess with that kind of power.

This week Kyle decided building a robot to protect us for any such future attack would be a good idea. Of course, when Kyle has an idea it’s better to just skip town (it’s safer that way) So long story short- the robot tore his arm off. I really can’t fault the robot either, Kyle just sets himself up for these kind of things.

Oh, we never found a haberdasher. But we did find some Gorilla Tape. It was a pretty funny scene on the way to the emergency room, Kyle lost so much blood he thought he was on the Apollo 13 mission. heh heh.

This week’s comic is actually a throwback from a long time ago… probably like 10-11 years ago. The drawing actually references an even older drawing (13-14 yrs?) that Kyle did featuring Pikachu meeting a zombie and throwing up. I think it was during the Poke’craze of the later 90’s and for what ever reason (i don’t remember now) but Kyle drew this up. The heavy vomiting panel was accompanied by an exaggerated vomiting sound (done either by Kyle or Mat) every time the comic surfaced. Why does he meet a zombie and blow chunks? I’m sure it was in reference to some inside joke, which escaped me at the moment. It was then turned into a cartoon cat meeting a zombie. Cats featured heavily as the brunt of comedic jokes at the time (Kyle’s family had 2 cats at his house, as did Mat) And cats are just fun to mess with.

I actually dug this drawing out a stack of Kyle’s drawings and we thought it would be fun to put it up as this weeks comic. Many thanks to illustrator for rendering the pencils into solid lines and Kudos to Casey for his coloring on this, it’s a great match for the silly cartoon style. Enjoy

Kyle phoned me awhile back with this weeks comic strip idea. “Mario Van Peebles bursts through the window and beats the hell out of Kyle, Jeremy and Casey.” “What does he just lurk outside the window?” I asked, “Sure. And when someone makes fun of him he descends upon them like a fury.” A lot of people think he sucked in Highlander 3 (let’s face it, he’s no Clancy Brown.) We thought he was pretty awesome in ‘Solo’ though.

If you always wondered what happens during our delays, this pretty much sums it up. Kyle came up with this idea, and originally spun it talking directly about the comic being late- breaking the ‘third wall’ as it were. I wasn’t sure how that was going to relate to the Backspace universe so i tweaked it just a tad bit avoiding the subject, but keeping the premise intact. You can still see the ‘Backspace mug’ here and Kyle and Casey are wearing different shirts. I thought this was pretty funny- it comes from the film “Let The Right One In” which is some foreign vampire flick (i think) but i can let Kyle talk about that more here. I really like the joke setup where the vampire basically tricks Kyle into inviting him in, and it’s totally something Kyle would do on accident. heh heh. – Jeremy __________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Well tomorrow is the day that Apple will supposedly announce the iSlate/iTablet/iPad whatever they hell they are going to call it. I would just laugh my ass off if there was no tablet and Stevie J was just messing with everyone. But I know that is not likely and there will be some sort of tablet thing. Most of the rumors say it’s going to be a larger iPod Touch device that you will be able to get your newspaper and magazines on. Eh not too exciting to me. There is also some rumors saying that it will be a new way of gaming. If it is a “gaming” device it will just be like my iPhone and meant for the casual gamer. What would really excite me would be to have the tablet work like the Wacom Cintiq! Now that would be the balls and would help you the viewer since that is what I would use to color Backspace! I will wait and see what they announce tomorrow and I will most likely be posting about it tomorrow. I am a huge Apple whore so I will be all over it. It could have potential but it could also disappoint. What excited me even more though is a non tablet rumor with the launch of a 22″ touch screen iMac. MMMMMMM YUMMY! So I just finished reading the live blog for the Apple Event and surprise surprise it’s a tablet. Not just a table but the iPad. What a freaking stupid ass name. I feel like I need to stick it in my pants for protections against leaks. But with the name aside let me tell you what I think of the device so far without actually being able to play with it yet.

It’s an oversized iPod Touch with some nice features added to it. Almost a 10″ screen and a .5″ thin body makes it super portable. It runs a variation of the iPod Touch OS so all the current apps will run on it. Besides all of the “apps” the only real big applications for it is the iWork suite which has been re-tooled for a touch work environment. This actually excites me a bit, it’s just like in the movies where you do everything by touch, just minus the holograms. There is also an eBook reader which I will have to see in person to decide if I like it our not. I am a big fan of the eInk screens on both the Kindle and the Nook. It is super easy to read and I am still not quite sure if I want to sit down for a couple hours to read a book on a LCD screen.

Over all it does everything the iPod Touch does plus adds in iWork, eBooks, iPhoto, HD YouTube videos and a nice 1GHZ processor which will allow app developers to step it up a notch with their apps including games. Though showed a Need For Speed game that actually looked pretty damn good!

My overall thought is this:

When my wife’s Mac Mini goes (which we really only use for email and web browsing and pictures) then I would consider this. Why not? It starts at $499 which is not bad for an Apple product. Still nothing I can do real work on but it is a nice device for light computing and everyday web stuff. A little disappointed that there is not a web cam for video conferencing but there is always version 2 still to come.

No other announcements from Apple which was kind of shocking. Must be holding it all back until the summer. For a full rundown on the Apple Event and more info on the iPad (frick I hate saying that already) check out the Cnet blog here.

Update February 1, 2010

There will be a delay in this week’s comic. I was so upset that the Grammy’s did not include the keyboard cat to play people off that I had a nervous breakdown and went streaking to my local supermarket, got arrested, loved by my inmate, got out early on good behavior by teaching a blind man to hear and forgot to color the comic. Anyway look for it later this week, probably mid week.

Backspace was originally written to have a fourth character based on our friend and collaborator, Nick. We thought we’d pay homage to him in this weeks strip, in which Nick meets an untimely end… it was just too funny to pass up Sorry Nick! Kyle pointed out several similarities between Batman Begins and Santa Claus- the more we dug into the lines from the movie the more apparent this comic was going to be hilarious (if you’ve seen Batman Begins…that is.) It actually fits so perfect that it’s kinda scary. Merry Christmas everyone!

Charlie Brown is a staple of Thanksgiving and the resemblance between him and Casey is pretty close, so why not? Kudos to Kyle for inserting the random ending to this one, i laughed pretty hard when i saw the rough pencils.
